Uni students dress smart
No, it's not the front row of a New York fashion show it's just another day at university in Brisbane.
The days of throwing on a pair of trakkie daks before rushing out the door to a lecture are well and truly over, with styleconscious Generation Yers making the college halls look more like a fashion parade than a learning environment.
Dr Prue Ahrens, a lecturer in visual culture at the University of Queensland, says young celebrity role models and high disposable incomes are to blame for the change in the wardrobes of socalled poor university students. "I think it's got a lot to do with celebrities in today's culture," Ahrens says.
"If you look at people like, dare I say, Paris Hilton, but also Mischa Barton, Nicole Richie, female celebrities coming out of the USA and Europe and Australia are much younger than they used to be.
"I think that has an effect because there are these young people who are very style conscious and you definitely see it play out here on campus.
"That look of the big sunnies, the skinny jeans, oversized handbags it's all here."
Ahrens says there have always been subculture fashions at university, but the difference now is that the fashion students are flaunting has a much higher price tag.
She says it's not unusual to see students carrying Louis Vuitton handbags or wearing brands such as Versace and designer jeans.
"The goths have always been there, but now we're seeing a glamour tied up with expensiveness and luxury brands," she says. "I think also, the increase in disposable incomes comes from students staying at home for much longer.
"Rather than paying the rent and eating the twominute noodles we did, they can spend money on clothes."
Wendy Armstrong, discipline leader of fashion at Queensland University of Technology, believes more students have parttime jobs these days and often wear to university what they will wear to work beforehand or afterwards.
"There's no division any more between what you wear to university or work and what you wear out either," Armstrong says.
She also believes fashion design students have some influence over what students in other faculties wear because they set such a high standard.
QUT fashion design graduate John Prikryl, who has his own label Check and a store in Fortitude Valley, has designed Tshirts emblazoned with slogans such as "007 Licensed to Learn" for the students to wear on campus.
QUT's vicechancellor was so impressed he bought 12,000 of them to give to every new student at the start of this year.
"In a way that has influenced the way students are dressing," Armstrong says.
Prikryl says QUT's head of fashion Suzi Vaughan came up with the idea with the aim of making corporate university wear more appealing, moncler pas cher.
"When you think of university promotional items, you think daggy, illfitting polos with the uni logo on them," Prikryl says.
Prikryl has just finished designing another round of shirts for next year's new students, this time with a different design and slogan.
"It's a good way of promoting the uni and providIng cheap, arguably cool, Tshirts for the students," he says. "And the students love them the response has been fantastic."
QUT journalism student Rebecca Burnett has a parttime job as a retail assistant and still lives at home, so she admits to spending most of her money on clothes, bags and shoes.
She doesn't think twice about forking out $250 for a Shakuhachi dress to get her through a long day hitting the books.
"I bought one the other day to wear out and also to wear with flats during the day at uni as well," she says.
"When I first started (university), I thought it was going to be a more casual environment, but there's definitely pressure to look good for yourself and your peers."
The increase in fashion consciousness isn't as noticeable in male students, who tend to stick to more casual attire such as shorts and thongs, according to Ahrens.
"You do see the odd male student who's a bit fashion savvy but not to the same degree as the females," she says.
But QUT business student Ben Fitzgerald, 21, can only recall dressing daggily for uni once before, and that was at 9pm in a hoodie, track suit pants and thongs to hand in an assignment.
"They say uni's a chillout place, but you're there all day sometimes so you don't want to be in your pyjamas, and I often go out afterwards anyway," he says.
