On top of those eight we also have a few other schools interested for next year, which is exciting."
The game is played in any weather except for lightning storms with 10 players on each team; three defence, three midfielders, three attackers and one goalie. Smithson said they have helped schools receive long sticks, nets and balls through grants to help incorporate these schools into the league.
"The cost is big for schools to start a new program so we tried to help them out by getting the long sticks used by defenders on top of the nets and balls to play," said Smithson. "Aside from that the only thing we've needed from schools is to have a teacher liaison and to provide field time for games and practices."
Starting the league and finding schools to be interested was easier when there was a "champion" athlete at the school already in the sport according to Smithson. He said physical education sessions also helped increase interest. Once they found students interested he said the biggest difficulty was finding the students coaches.
"The biggest thing I've been trying to do is to help find each school a coach, which was easy in some cases, but a little tougher in others," he said. "Each school has had the opportunity to get together a few times for the season now and they're all getting excited to get started."
